The Yellow Wallpaper is a 90-minute opera adapted from the book by Charlotte Perkins Gilman composed by Catherine with libretto Judith C. Lane. It is scored for cello, piano, flute and synthesizer and has a cast of 6 women and one man. It tells the tale of a young writer and mother who is forced to undergo the "rest cure," which was the medical advice given at the turn of the century to women who were exhibiting symptoms of "nervous depression," or were otherwise acting in manners that were not acceptable to society. The "cure" involved many months of complete bed rest, with no reading, no writing, no visitors and no excitement. The main character in The Yellow Wallpaper (who remains nameless throughout the opera) attempts to abide by her doctor/husband's advice and to undergo the rest cure, but it has tragic consequences.
The Yellow Wallpaper received a full production at Peabody Conservatory of Music and was a finalist at the Opera Vista International Opera Competition. Catherine and Judith began writing at YADDO and Virginia Center for the Arts writers colonies and developed the opera through staged readings at the Actor’s Playhouse and American Opera Projects. The opera was a Moore Opera Competition and Eugene O’Neill Musical Theater Conference finalist.
